Merriam-Webster defines "License" as:

A right or permission granted by a competent authority (as of a government or a business) to engage in some business or occupation, do some act, or engage in some transaction which would be unlawful without such right or permission; also A document, plate, or tag evidencing a license granted. source

A software license is very much the same thing. It allows one user, or one entity (which could then be a series of users) to use a particular piece of software for public and/or private use.

Kinds of Licenses

Software licenses run the gambit of allowances and restrictions. Some of the more popular kinds are listed here.

  • BSD
  • Apache
  • GPL
  • Creative Commons
  • Apple
  • Mozilla (a.k.a MPL)

The list goes on and on. The GPL and Creative Commons are probably two of the more popular licenses, followed very closely by the BSD license. All have varying levels of use and reuse allowed.
