Tips and Tricks

Install OS X to one machine from another

If you want to install OS X on one machine using the optical drive of another machine, you can do this using Firewire.

  1. Boot up the target machine into target disk mode by holding T on startup
  2. Hook it up to the source machine
  3. Boot the source machine from the install CD or DVD
  4. Choose the target machine's drive as where you want to install.

Install OS X from your iPod or other HFS+ formatted firewire drive

  1. Open Disk Utility on the Mac.
  2. Drag the OS .dmg to the left pane.
  3. Click your Mac's drive and you'll see a RESTORE option on the right side, click that.
  4. In the Source area, drag the OS .dmg from the left pane to the source.
  5. Make the destination your external firewire hard drive.
  6. Click restore, you won't have to erase the destination and you can skip checksum.
  7. Rename your external firewire hard drive to "Mac OS X Install DVD".
  8. Finally, go to your Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences and choose your external drive.
