Install OS X to one machine from another
If you want to install OS X on one machine using the optical drive of another machine, you can do this using Firewire.
- Boot up the target machine into target disk mode by holding T on startup
- Hook it up to the source machine
- Boot the source machine from the install CD or DVD
- Choose the target machine's drive as where you want to install.

Install OS X from your iPod or other HFS+ formatted firewire drive
- Open Disk Utility on the Mac.
- Drag the OS .dmg to the left pane.
- Click your Mac's drive and you'll see a RESTORE option on the right side, click that.
- In the Source area, drag the OS .dmg from the left pane to the source.
- Make the destination your external firewire hard drive.
- Click restore, you won't have to erase the destination and you can skip checksum.
- Rename your external firewire hard drive to "Mac OS X Install DVD".
- Finally, go to your Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences and choose your external drive.
